Mastering Rigid Stone Wool Installation

As building codes shift toward requiring continuous exterior insulation, contractors must adapt their installation techniques. ROCKWOOL Comfortboard® is the premier rigid stone wool board for exterior applications, offering unmatched fire resistance, vapor permeability, and thermal performance.

Installation Best Practices

  • Substrate Prep: Ensure the weather-resistive barrier (WRB) is fully installed and sealed over the exterior sheathing before applying Comfortboard.
  • Fastening: Use insulation washers (commonly called "plasti-grip" washers) with appropriate exterior-grade screws to secure the Comfortboard tightly against the sheathing.
  • Cladding Attachment: Because Comfortboard is rigid, furring strips (wood or metal) can be installed directly over the insulation, fastening through the board into the structural studs behind it. This creates a secure rainscreen cavity for your final siding or cladding.
