Stopping the Stomp: Impact Noise vs. Airborne Noise

If you can hear every footstep from the floor above, you are dealing with impact (structure-borne) noise. If you can hear voices or TV audio, you are dealing with airborne noise. To truly soundproof a ceiling, you must address both.

Step 1: Absorb Airborne Noise

First, fill the ceiling joist cavities with ROCKWOOL Safe'n'Sound®. Its dense stone wool fibers will trap and absorb the airborne sound waves (voices, music) before they can resonate in the empty cavity.

Step 2: Decouple Impact Noise

To stop the physical thud of footsteps, you must disconnect the ceiling drywall from the floor joists above. Install Resilmount® Sound Isolation Clips (such as the A237R) to the joists, snap in metal furring channels, and attach your drywall to the channels. The patented rubber in the Resilmount clips absorbs the vibration of the footsteps, preventing the noise from entering the room below.
